A dad passing a nail to his son for him to secure a tile to a roof sectionA total of 50 dads and kids enjoyed a day out acquiring new skills in traditional construction on Saturday in The Great Barn at Hellens, Much Marcle. With guidance from Charlie Lupton of Make Your Own History, they learnt how to piece together a timber-frame house, read carpenter’s marks, thatch and tile roofs, construct cruck frames and bodge pegs. Hopes that children might return home and upgrade the garden shed may have been a little optimistic, but such a hands-on insight into the process and components of construction was certainly inspirational – not least because it was experienced within a beautiful timber-frame with considerable history of its own. Our thanks to Sainsbury’s Ross-on-Wye store for supporting the event with funds, to Jade Clemens for once again capturing a fantastic photographic record of the morning session, and to Rob Sedman for capturing a time-lapse series of the construction process in the afternoon.
